Holi is traditionally celeberated on the last full moon day of the month of phalgun which could be either be the end of february or early march.Holi 2020 will be celeberated on 1oth march this year.
Holi represents the triumph of good over evil,the advent of winter & completion of winter.The festival is also celeberated as a thanksgiving for a better harvest & lasts for a day & a night.The first evening is called Chhoti Holi or holika Dahana.
Holi is popularly known as the Indian ”Festival of spring”,the ”Festival of colours”,or the ”Festival of love”.The festival signifies the arrival of spring ,the blossoming of love & for many a festive day to meet others ,play & laugh,forget & forgive & repair broken relationships.
WHY IS HOLI CELEBERATED WITH COLOURS?
Due to the love story of Krishna & Radha ,Holi is celeberated as the day of coloured love for couples.Red colour reflects fertility,blue is the colour of Krishna ,yellow is the colour of turmeric & green symbolizes the start of spring & something new.
Holi is based on a legend about king Hiranyakashyap.Hiranyakashyap wanted to kill his son,so he called his siter,holika .Hiranyakashyap was an evil king who wanted everyone to worship him but his son was lord vishnu’s faithful devotee.Angry by the devotion of his son to a god other than himself,he ordered his sister holika ,to go into a blazing fire together with his son.However ,holika was engulfed in the fire& not prahalad &thereby the reason behind celeberating the tradition of holika dahan or holika on holi.
